How to Have a Memorable First Look
Last October I started a series called “31 Tips for Enjoying Your Wedding Day,” and I ambitiously attempted to post every day of that month. I made it through 20 days before tuckering out. This might sound like failure to most people, but I have a hard time doing ANYTHING for 20 out of 31 days of any given month- so I claim it as a success.
Some people have asked for the other 11 tips I had lined up, so I am picking up where I left off, at tip #21, How to Have a Memorable First Look.
Step 1: Decide if you are going to have a First Look (a set aside time to see your bride or groom before the ceremony). Lots of people argue for or against, but if for some reason you aren’t having one, ignore these steps, admire the pretty photos, and have a great day.
Step 2: Decide on the details. Where will it be? Who will be there? Then, fill your parents in on what is happening. More often than not, parents don’t understand and are hurt and confused when they realize they won’t be there for the first look. I feel like a heads-up will help them to be prepared and understand what’s happening. Sometimes couples opt for a crowd at their first look, but it’s not usually the case.
Step 3: Pay special attention to your senses. I learned this in a seminar from another photographer, and I love sharing it with couples! Our memories are stored with our senses, and people are always saying how their day went by in such a whirlwind that they have a hard time creating memories. So, take a moment before & during the first look to smell, feel, listen, look, and taste.
Step 4: Feel free to feel. I’ve said it before, but emotions photograph really well. Leave your stiff upper lip at home! Also, grooms frequently ask me what is expected of them right before the first look. The answer? Unless your bride has given you specific instructions, be yourself and allow yourself to feel.
So brides, what are you hoping for in your first look? Marrieds, what was your favorite part of your first look? I’d love to hear your experience!

Love this series! Have been reading them all morning
Beautiful photos. We eloped, so we didn’t even get a wedding. Maybe someday we’ll do a formal ceremony. I think the first look idea is sweet.
